Release of Annual Job Barometer Report Reveals Demand for Asset and Portfolio Managers, Development Execs

The SelectLeaders/Cornell Job Barometer Report kicked off the 25th Annual Real Estate Conference.  The findings were presented by Anthony J. LoPinto, President of Equinox Partners and founder of Select Leaders, and Dr. David Funk, director of the Cornell University Program in Real Estate.

Mr. LoPinto opened with an overview of current trends in the real estate industry and discussed positions that will be in high demand in 2008. While Mr. LoPinto noted the emergence of pension funds, institutional investors, and insurance companies as major players in real estate investing, he forecasted a slowdown in hiring for finance professionals until the market rebounds. In his projections for hot positions in Q4 2008, Mr. LoPinto forecasted high demand for asset and portfolio managers, development and acquisitions executives, and staff level accountants.

The presentation also included recommendations for both real estate job seekers and employers.  Mr. LoPinto suggested that job seekers evaluate job content, firm culture, peers and colleagues, long-term opportunities, and a firm’s reputation. Job seekers were also instructed to consider how employers will evaluate their contributions to the firm. With respect to employers, Mr. LoPinto stressed the importance of human capital.  He advised employers to utilize internet recruiting to identify first-rate employees, and to create strategies to improve talent retention.

A major step to enhance the Program in Real Estate’s role as a career management resource to the Cornell Real Estate Council and the real estate industry as a whole was the SelectLeaders/Cornell Job Barometer collaboration initiated in 2007.  The Program partnered with SelectLeaders, the leading real estate job site for professionals, to produce a biannual Job Barometer report on the commercial real estate job market.  The Job Barometer utilizes data collected from three sources:  a comprehensive sample from 8 primary job boards of all online job postings for professional commercial real estate positions, surveys among senior and middle management in commercial real estate companies, and over 70,000 resumes each six months from job applicants submitted on the SelectLeaders site, to provide a comprehensive look at the commercial real estate job market.  The annual report is regarded as the leading snapshot of the commercial real estate job market.
