Robert Duncan Receives the 2011 RE Industry Leader Award

The Cornell Real Estate Review has named Robert Duncan, chairman, co-founder, and managing principal of Transwestern Investment Company, as the recipient of the 2011 Industry Leader Award. As part of this award, an interview with Mr. Duncan will appear in this spring’s issue, and he will be the speaker at the final weekly Cornell Real Estate Industry Seminar of Spring Semester 2011 on May 5th in the Beck Center, Room 396 at 4:30 P.M.

The Industry Leader Award recognizes transformational leadership in the real estate industry. Formerly known as the “Executive Profile” appearing in the Cornell Real Estate Review, this award is a top honor given to those with the influence and integrity to have created a lasting legacy within the industry. Past recipients include: Art Gensler, founder and CEO, Gensler, a global architecture firm; Andrew Florance, founder and CEO, Costar, the commericial real estate information company; Samuel Zell, chairman and president, Equity Group Investments, a major Chicago-based private real estate investment firm; and William Sanders, chairman, Verde Realty, a leading developer, owner and operator of corporate facilities on the U.S.-Mexico border.

After earning three degrees (BBA, MBA, and LLB) from the University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Duncan began his career with Trammell Crow in Dallas, Texas. He was responsible for commercial operations in San Antonio in 1978 when he left to form Transwestern. Today this full-service real estate firm operates in 28 major markets and leases/manages over 255 million square feet in 1,200 properties. Transwestern and Transwestern Commercial Services (Mr. Duncan is chairman) were involved in over $4 billion in real estate transactions in 2010, and recently expanded to the Northeast with an office in New York City.

The Cornell Real Estate Review was founded in 2002 as a forum for faculty, professionals, and real estate students to focus attention on current issues in the real estate industry. The Review focuses on the interdisciplinary nature of real estate, blending informative articles on real estate practice with application-based academic research. The Review covers a broad range of issues from the various real estate disciplines including design, business economics, engineering, finance, law, planning, development, marketing, and property management.
