Program in Real Estate Job Placement

While first-year students in Cornell’s Program in Real Estate are actively networking to secure internships for the upcoming summer, second year students are focused on finding full-time positions after graduation. Students are able to enhance their job-search skills through mock-interviews, career events, and networking with industry professionals. Most second year students update their resumes to incorporate the work experience gained from their summer internships and actively pursue positions throughout the entire year. After graduation, some students, such as Tyler Grooms, return to their summer internship employers to assume full-time positions. Other students have recently secured positions for full-time work and summer internships. Some of these individuals and their future employers are identified below.

Dan Lane (MPS/RE ’10)
Associate - Real Estate and Agricultural Investments
MetLife
Overland Park, KS

Dan Lane accepted an Associate position in the Real Estate and Agricultural Investments division of MetLife in Overland Park, KS. Lane will be part of the MetLife team responsible for over $12 billion in agricultural loans. A native of the Midwest, Dan describes this job as “a great opportunity” because it utilizes his diverse background. He says that his undergraduate degree in agricultural economics coupled with his MPS/RE degree give him a unique perspective to understand the intricacies and risks facing the agricultural and real estate markets.

Lane first learned about opportunities at Metlife while conducting his internship search as a first-year student. MetLife listed an internship posting on Cornell CareerNet. Lane applied for the internship and was invited to Morristown, NJ for an interview. Unfortunately, he was unable to interview due to a scheduling conflict. However, Lane kept in touch with MetLife and was offered a full-time position in the fall of his second year.

Tyler Grooms (MPS/RE ’10)
Los Arboles Management
Seattle, Washington

Tyler Grooms is returning to Los Arboles Management after successfully completing an internship there last summer. Los Arboles Management is an asset management firm with about $1.0 billion under management. The firm invests primarily through direct equity interests in luxury hotels, agriculture, raw land, commercial, retail, and exotic products. Grooms had been pursuing a position with Los Arboles Management since the summer before he started the Program in Real Estate. When Los Arboles Management came to Cornell in February ’09, for on campus recruiting, he was prepared for the interview. Grooms commented, “The Program’s core classes and weekly industry speaker seminars provided me the fundamentals of real estate as well as various perspectives on current industry practices. Mock interviews allowed me to practice interview techniques and receive feedback from real estate professionals before real job interviews. I think all of this, when combined, gave me the ability to converse confidently about real estate during interviews. I also appreciate the Cornell network that provided me the opportunity to interview with Los Arboles Management.”

Tyler Williams and Cliff Coffey (MPS/RE ’10, MBA ’11)
Bank of America Summer Associate

Dual-degree students Cliff Coffey and Tyler Williams accepted summer internships with Bank of America as Summer Associates. Both will be spending time with the Real Estate, Gaming & Lodging group. Williams will be working in Charlotte, North Carolina while Coffey will be working in the New York City office. Although Williams expects to work long hours, he is excited about his opportunity with Bank of America, which has “the advantages that come from a combined Merrill Lynch and Bank of America. With real estate investment banking, clients look to Bank of America because they can also provide debt, and have a strong balance sheet going forward.” Williams and Coffey will be responsible for supervising analysts’ valuations and pitch books, as well as working on capital raises and small acquisitions.

Andrew Green (MPS ’11)
Summer Associate
Lubert-Adler Real Estate Funds
Atlanta, Georgia

During the winter break, Andy Green accepted a summer internship with Lubert-Adler Real Estate Funds. Andy reports that, “The Cornell Program in Real Estate has prepared me well for my internship in private equity this summer. I’m not aware of another masters program that offers the kind of training in management and quantitative skills, like an MBA program, while arming me with the depth of understanding of the real estate asset and its context in the broader market. Coming from a background in investment banking, the quantitative aspects of the program continue to challenge and excite me."
