New Events Debut during Orientation Week
The 2010 Program in Real Estate’s new student orientation week will feature the addition of optional “Pre-orientation” events this August. The pre-orientation events will include an intensive weekend Professional Development Workshop, which is part of the Program’s emerging executive education offerings and made available to the public at large in addition to current students. Other activities are aimed at acclimating students to Ithaca and Cornell in advance of the start of classes.
The Professional Development workshop is set for Saturday and Sunday, August 14th and 15th, where Professors Mark Talbert and Bruce Kirsch will offer two full-day Financial Modeling with Microsoft Excel sessions designed to give students and members of the Cornell Real Estate Council a productivity boost. The 8am to 5pm sessions are real estate industry focused and offer the latest in techniques and tips for using this valuable tool.
On Monday, August 16th, Program in Real Estate founder and former director, Bob Abrams will conduct an informative tour of Cornell that will include the sights and landmarks, with a dash of history and lore, of the ‘truly American university’ from 9am to 11am. Following Bob’s tour, Program in Real Estate Senior Lecturer and Director of Corporate Outreach Pike Oliver teams up with his wife, Rosemarie Oliver, MS, RD to offer “Brain Food for the Grad Student on the Go”, a lunch hosted by dietician Rosemarie which will feature a discussion of healthy eating for the busy grad student (noon to 1pm), followed by a hike of one or more of Ithaca’s beautiful natural wonders, the gorgeous gorges, guided by Pike Oliver from 1pm – 3pm.
Program Manager and resident golf pro Bryan Vliet will treat students to 18 holes of golf on Tuesday, August 17th at Cornell’s Robert Trent Jones championship course. Tee time will be at 8:30am. Later that same day, students are invited to learn the history of Cayuga Lake while taking in the sunset and scenery from its waters aboard the The Haendel, a 45’ research vessel. The Cayuga Lake informational boat tour takes place from 4pm to 6pm.
Incoming students were polled to determine the amount of interest in the planned activities that range from academic preparation to enjoyment of the beauty of the area’s natural environment and, overwhelmingly, students indicated interest in most, if not all, events.
