New Dual Degree Option

The Cornell Program in Real Estate and the Johnson Graduate School of Management are pleased to announce the availability of an accelerated, two-year dual degree option that will culminate in the award of both an MBA and an MPS/RE degree. This option will first be available to students entering in the Fall of 2007.

“We feel this new dual degree will provide prospective students with a keen interest in both real estate and business an attractive option,” said David Funk, Director of the Program in Real Estate, adding, “it provides a focused professional education for those with a clear real estate career path in addition to a core MBA curriculum.

The five-semester dual degree program begins in May with an intensive summer of MBA core coursework followed by two semesters of real estate core coursework. The summer between the first and second years remains open for an internship opportunity, an important asset for career changers as well as career enhancers. Second year students divide their time between the real estate and MBA programs. As part of the dual degree program, students will complete a real estate specialization, just as their counterparts in the regular MBA program do.

“We believe this program may be an attractive option for students with very strong quantitative skills who demonstrate the ability to successfully complete both programs in fewer than the three years required in the traditional dual degree program,” said Cathy Dove, Associate Dean for MBA Programs and Administration.

Students interested in the accelerated dual degree option will still be required to apply separately to the Program in Real Estate and the Johnson Graduate School of Management. They will complete a total of 84 credit hours that includes a real estate concentration of at least four courses (10 – 12 credit hours.)

“Participating in the dual degree option has opened so many doors for me,” said Penny Liu, a first year student in the three-year dual degree option. “I interact with twice as many people and have access to twice as many resources.”

“Even though the two-year program has just recently been announced, we have already seen strong interest in this option,” said Susan Tosto, Coordinator of Admissions and Students Services, adding that some applicants still opt for the traditional three year option, preferring the additional depth of course work and additional internship opportunities it offers.
