This February, eight Cornell graduate student teams participated in the 8th Annual Urban Land Institute / Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition. For the second consecutive year, a Cornell team received an Honorable Mention. The team, comprised of Dan Kelleher (Master of Regional Planning, 2010), Chris Koenig (Master of Regional Planning, 2010), Maureen Bolton (Master of Landscape Architecture, 2010), Zachary Boggs (Master of Landscape Architecture, 2010), and Chris Haine ( Master of Professional Studies in Real Estate, 2010) was recognized for their urban design project named “East Village Squares.”

The ULI/Gerald D. Hines competition is an annual graduate school-level student competition for real estate and design students, which focuses on interdisciplinary learning and teamwork. Nearly 660 students forming 132 teams from 48 universities in the U.S. and Canada applied to compete in this year’s competition. Each team must include five students and have representation from three disciplines. The five students of the “East Village Squares” team came from landscape architecture, city and regional planning, and real estate.

“We are thrilled to receive an Honorable Mention for our project,” stated team leader Dan Kelleher. “We are honored to receive this recognition from the ULI competition judges, and we are grateful for the support of our faculty advisor Pike Oliver and professors Vanucchi, Trowbridge.”

Program in Real Estate Senior Lecturer Pike Oliver, the lead faculty adviser for the team, described the competition as a unique opportunity for students to work in a competitive, multi-disciplinary team reflecting the real-world development process. “I am proud of all eight Cornell teams that participated in this year’s competition, and I know they have all benefited greatly from this experience. Congratulations to the ‘East Village Squares’ team on their second Honorable Mention. I was honored to assume the role of lead faculty adviser from Brad Olson who advised Cornell teams in this competition every year since its inception and continues to be involved. It is gratifying to see student participation continue to grow.”

On March 8th, a reception and gallery exhibition of all five Cornell student-team projects was held at the Big Red Barn Graduate Center. David Funk, Director of the Program in Real Estate, stated “Cornell students and their faculty advisors -- Profs. Pike Oliver, Brad Olson, Deni Ruggeri, Ann Forsyth, Jamie Vanucchi-Hartung, and Jeremy Foster -- exemplified the remarkable learning experience and work product that comes from interdisciplinary collaboration." The exhibit and reception served as a celebration where students, faculty and friends from all over Cornell were able to gather to view all the team projects side-by-side for the first time. While the Gallery exhibition marked the conclusion of the 2010 ULI/Hines Student Urban Design Competition for Cornell, students were inspired for next year’s competition.”
