Class of 2011 Begins Their Journey Together During Orientation
On Wednesday the incoming class at Cornell’s Program in Real Estate (PRE) completed their orientation week at locations on and off the campus. With events including tours, introductory classes, and advisor meetings, new students were introduced to some key people and places that will become a part of their experience at Cornell. Highlights include the Hoffman Challenge Course, internship presentations, and social events.
The incoming class spent one afternoon at the Hoffman Challenge Course on Mt. Pleasant. “This experience was very helpful in the team building process especially since most of us met only a few days before,” explained Kris Rhoads, PRE Class of 2011. The class formed two groups at the course, and tackled problems that required collaboration and teamwork. Working together to solve new, unfamiliar problems provided an opportunity for students to build friendships while having a good time.
During internship presentations, new PRE students found out what to expect next summer, and got a snapshot of the real estate industry today. During their summer internships, the PRE Class of 2010 worked for development firms, investment banks, government organizations, and other real estate firms. Notable tasks included analyzing different forms of equity, urban planning, financial strategy development, and even creating a new valuation method. Students reported satisfaction with their posts, and some came back with job offers.
With the Class of 2011 coming together from around the globe, the social events served many purposes. At Taughannock Falls State Park, located on the west shore of Cayuga Lake, PRE students enjoyed a picnic that highlighted the natural beauty surrounding Ithaca. The food was outstanding, and some opted to take a short hike to the waterfall. In addition to having fun, students got to know their new cohorts on a more personal level.
Throughout orientation, new students have been introduced to alumni and other industry leaders early and often. Chris Chorebanian, PRE Class of 2011 said that “…all of the faculty and professors are doing a great job in helping us develop relationships with those in the Cornell Real Estate network.” It is clear that this interaction is one of the hallmarks of Cornell’s Program in Real Estate. On the last day of orientation, David Funk, PRE Director, hosted a barbecue. At this event, new students mingled with faculty, staff, and second-year students, as well as PRE friends and family members. During orientation, the PRE Class of 2011 discovered more about their path for the next two years and began friendships that will last a lifetime.
