Associate Real Estate Council Visits New York City
On September 29th the Associate Real Estate Council, an interdisciplinary graduate real estate club, embarked on its first-ever “Real Estate Trek” to New York City. The purpose of this one-day trip was to showcase the variety of real estate careers available to new students in New York and to provide first and second year students with an opportunity to network with alumni and potential employers.
Twenty students in total, twelve from the Program in Real Estate, seven from the Johnson Graduate School of Management and one from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering participated in the event. The first stop of the day was Bear Stearns Asset Management, where students attended a finance panel discussion and then enjoyed lunch generously provided by our hosts. Speakers on the finance panel included Ralph Rose, Senior Managing Director Real Estate Investment Banking MBA ‘84, Ben Milde, Managing Director Commercial Mortgage ‘96, Marilyn Mawn, Vice President Commercial Mortgage ‘96, and Jeffrey Hammer, Senior Managing Director, Asset Management, Private Equity.
Trek participants then proceeded to Lower Manhattan where they toured the Albanese Organization’s Solarie project, New York City’s first and only LEED Gold certified residential tower. Finally, the group concluded the day with a construction tour of Toll Brothers’ “110 East Third” condominium project, a 77-unit 21-story tower in the East Village, hosted by David Von Spreckelson, Toll Brothers’ Vice President in charge of New York urban development.
“The real estate trek was a great opportunity to tour different properties in New York City and hear a panel from Bear Stearns,” said Daniel Lentz, a dual degree student in the Johnson Graduate School of Management and the Program in Real Estate. “The tour of the Solaire was particularly interesting. The property manager gave us a guided tour of the building and the various green certified building tactics used in construction.”
