Orientation

First-year students are required to arrive in Ithaca at least one week before instruction begins in order to participate in orientation. During this time, you will be introduced to your classmates and have ample time to begin building friendships that will last beyond your two years. The schedule varies from day to day, and includes such highlights as Real Estate 101, a survey lecture that sets the stage for your first semester; walking tours of campus to get you acquainted with Cornell’s rich history and architectural styles; teambuilding activities with your class; and meeting your faculty advisor. Of course, food brings people together, so breakfast and lunch are provided, as well as evening barbeques and beer-and-pizza events. Capping off the week is the Annual PRE Golf Tournament, in which you have the chance to form teams with second-year students and hit some buckets—golfing talent not required.

Orientation is also your time to register for classes, participate in the Graduate School’s orientation seminar, take any placement tests necessary, and begin learning about internships. When classes begin, you should feel comfortable with your new environment and ready to make the most of your first semester.
